Has anyone worked on NetBackup realtime? I'm not able to find its documentation. Does it require a separate license ?

What are the prerequisites for it.

Netbackup 7.1.0.2 support for RHEL

I need a solution

Hello,

I've been trying to find out which version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1.0.2 is able to support? I've been looking through the software compatibility list and I am not clear based on the information provided.

For example in the NBU_76_SCL.pdf that I downloaded, it mentioned the Red Hat Enterprise 6 is supported with Minimum Netbackup 7.1.

Which version of RHEL or kernel level is supported by 7.1.0.2 ?

I am being asked whether our current  Netbackup system 7.1.0.2 is able to support the below version.

  1. RHEL 6
  2. RHEL 6.3
  3. RHEL 6.6 and
  4. RHEL 7.1

Please help.

Thanks

Chan

Best solution to back up Citrix Xen Server

I need a solution

Hello,

I am wondering what the best solution would be for the following:

I have on Citrix Xen Server host that has 7 virtual machines on it.  I am currently using PHD Virtual to back this up to a NAS.  I am looking to move to different software for the backups.  One of the virtual machines is running SQL and one is running AD and DNS.  There is also one physical server that has AD, DNS, and DHCP on it that i would also like to back up in the same solution.  What i was curious about is what is the best way to back all of this up?  Is it Back Up Exec or System Restore?  Or would neither work?  I am looking for something that will back up to the existng NAS and allow for item level restores as well as fast restores of full VM's if ever needed.

Second question is, assuming one of the two products will work is it best practice to install it on its own server or could it be installed on teh physical that is existing with AD, DNS and DHCP?  I am assuming its own server and that is what i would shoot for, but for the sake of saving money i like to know my options.

Thank you for your assistance.

DLO7.6 question

1. How many clients does 1 admin console DLO 7.6 support?

2. Is your deduplication variable or static and if it is static what is the smallest bit that will be backed up?

3. I see i can load all DLO services on one machine. Can you provide a breakdown on how many endpoint or users were this is not recommended?

For example Should i not exceed more than 500 users before needing another admin console or need to seperate the deduplication server?

4. If i have multiple global locations do you recommend more than one Admin console?

Symantec System Recovery 2013 R2 Authentication Issue with NAS

I need a solution

Hi,

I imagine this question has already been addressed before but Google / Bing searches have lead me on a wild goose chase, so I'm posting this question here in hopes of an easy resolution.

We're using Symantec System Recovery 2013 R2 and we just installed a new Qnap NAS.  The environment is mixed Win7 / Win8 and some of the SSR clients have no issue authenticating with the NAS so that they can store backups there.  Roughly 35% of the client machines, though, can't authenticate correctly, no matter what login I use (e.g. domain\username : password, localusername : password, etc.).  Since it works on most of the machines, I feel confident my domain accounts and local accounts are setup correctly.  I even synced the passwords temporarily so I could side step the possiblity of a mistyped password.  The clients that won't authenticate with the new NAS will authenticate with an old failing Lacie NAS with a default local account of admin : admin, but they simply fail with every account I've tried with the new NAS.  I can't detect anything different between the windows 7 boxes that fail and the ones that suceed (same with the Win8 boxes).

Any clues would be appreciated, since I need to clean up our backup architeture as soon as I can.

Thanks.

Duplication to MSDP ends with: media write error (84)

Strange issue.  Duplicaiton of a single backup image is failing to MSDP.  Consistent failure mode.  Strange thing is - it is a *single* VMware backup image... no issues with any other VMware images or any other types of images.

Environment:

  • Solaris 10 master v. 7.6.1
  • Symantec 5220 Appliance media servers v. 2.6.1
  • Backup to Advanced Disk -> duplication to MSDP and tape

Hey there

Bit of a strange issue with Restoring/Staging process in BE 2014.

I have done restores from a VM/SAN Transport backup with no issues in the past. However I am doing a restore of a particular server, restoring just a test folder from the C drive (the Backup job ran successfully at the weekend), the restore job kicks in, loads the tape with no issue and then starts the staging process - dont have enough storage locally to do storage based backups. The byte count increases to 50.2GB and then just sits there. I dont see anything in the Job Activity so I dont know what it is (or isnt) doing... Any help/info appreciated.

Managing large backups over a network

I need a solution

Our current backup scheme is to perform a full backup on weekends and incremental backups during the week. I would like to store these backups off-site but the full backups are several terabytes in size and it would take too long to transfer them over the network every single week. I thought I could perform one initial full backup and then just top it off with small incremental backups thereafter. However, the documentation warned against this because in the event that we had to restore everything we would have to retore the full backup and then every single incremental backup thereafter in order. For a disaster recovery backup that would get unwieldy very quickly.

Is there some sort of backup scheme that's more bandwidth efficient than performing full backups every week?

[Backup Exec 2012] no media/Ready; No idle devices are available/robotic library offline

I need a solution

Hello,

I ran into some sudden issues using Backup Exec 2012 on Windows Server 2008 R2 in combination with a tape library. The library is a DELL PowerVault (IBM 3573-TL) with an IBM ULT3580-HH5 drive.

Now disk to tape duplication jobs are missing with error E000E020. While BE sets the robotic library offline due to "a general hardware error condition" reported by the library (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...). In reference to the second solution of the troubleshooting article I scanned the Windows System Event Log for the mentioned Event IDs. There were no hits. According to the first solution of the troubleshooting article I'm afraid I'm not aware how I would ideally check if there are bad tapes (so maybe someone could give me a little hint on that).

I tried a complete restart cycle including the BE administration server and the tape library.
Shut down the server > shut down the library > turn on the library waiting until it is on ready-state > turn on the server

The drive is recognized by Windows Device Manager and has a driver.

After that the BE administration displayed the library as online and its drive as ready (the drive name was extended by the term "(no media)"). Rerunning the duplication to tape jobs resulted in jobs not starting but remaining in the state of "Ready; No idle devices are available".

Then I tried to inventory the tape library via BE administration. The job started but didn't finish while after some time BE did set the robotic library offline again.

I feel like running cycles right now. Does anybody have some ideas on this? If you need further information on something I will try to provide it.

Cheers

Hi, Upgrading from BE2012 to BE2014 on an SBS 2011 Standrard server. In the Backup Exec Environment Check 2.0 I get a warning about the following:

The Simplified Disaster Recovery feature now requires the Microsoft Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) version 8.0 to create a Simplified Disaster Recovery disk or an image(.iso). ADK version 8.0 is supported only on Windows 2008 and later. You do not need to install the ADK now. The Create Disaster Recovery Disk Wizard guides you through the download and installation of the ADK.

Does anyone know if it is possible to install the ADK version 8 on a SBS2011 server?

Otherwise I suppose that I cant use the SDR functionality in BE2014 anymore right?

Appriciate if anyone has information regarding my problem.

I saw in some old forum posts (re: BE 2010) that someone was unable to do incremental backups on a Synology NAS because incremental backups were not supported unless an agent could be directly installed.  Have there been any changes to this since 2010 that might help me work around this?  This particular NAS does not support iSCSI, so I can't mount it directly...:-(

Specific Backup Selections or ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES with Exclusions

I need a solution

Hello,

I’m configuring backups for a few VM Guests (Windows Server 2008 R2) with multiple hard disk drives.  I accidentally “blew up” the Datastore/LUNs where these VM Guests reside by attempting a VMware Policy Type backup because there were disk drives that were larger than 2TB (our SANs, Datastores currently do not have the capacity to take a snapshot of a volume this large).  We will be upgrading our SANs in the future to handle the snapshot capacity.  I can create a VMware Policy Type and use the ‘Exclude all data disks’ attribute, but it will only take a snapshot of the C:\ drive (Operating System).  The problem with this is the Applications are installed on the D:\ drive.  After the C:\ (OS) and D:\ (\Program Files\, Applications), there are additional disk drives that have database components that we backup using different backup policies so we don’t need to worry about them.

My question is which of these two options is the best way to backup just the OS and Application installations?

  1. Create an MS-Windows Policy type and manually select the disk drives with the System_State attribute to mimic a “Full system backup?”
    1. Backup Selections = C:\, D:\, System_State
  1. Create an MS-Windows Policy type and select ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES, but configure exclusions to exclude specific disks that do not need to be backed up.  We are currently not leveraging BMR (Bare Metal Restore).
    1. Backup Selections = ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES
    2. Then navigate to: NetBackup Management > Host Properties > Clients > [client] Properties > Windows Client > Exclude Lists: B:\, F:\, L:\ for this specific backup policy

Recovery scenario would be to build up a fresh VM Guest (same OS version, same NBU Agent version) and restore the C:\, D:\, and System_State.  Then work with the application administrator/owner to restore the other content and databases.

CATTOOLS output question...

I need a solution

I recently ran a CATTOOLS to export one of my catalog files to a TXT file.  I had no problem creating this TXT file.  My question  revolves around the content of the TXT file it exported.  I searched for a KEY or cross reference, etc but I can't find anything.  In the exported TXT file, I see these and don't know what they are:

FP= Assuming this is the filepath

SZ= Assuming this is the file size

LB= ???

AT= ??? All values for AT appear to be the same number

CT= ???

MT= ???

ST= ???

AR= ???

XA= ???

IN= ???

OST= ???

IIMG= ???  Appears to a number that increases by 1 in each row.

Any help deciphering this output file would be greatly appreciated!

SAP redirected database restore using brrestore/rman_util failing

I need a solution

We are trying to restore the backup of an SAP Oracle database on an alternative client. The backups are made through brtools using the rman_util option.

I followed the directions for mentioned in the Netbackup SAP guide. I'm able to list the backup images using bplist and restores of the control-file through backint works. But when we want to restore the datafiles through rman we get the following errors:

channel sbt_1: ORA-19870: error while restoring backup piece HC2_beqfhgua.16701_1
ORA-19507: failed to retrieve sequential file, handle="HC2_beqfhgua.16701_1", parms=""
ORA-27029: skgfrtrv: sbtrestore returned error
ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text:
   Failed to open backup file for restore.

The restore job is visible on the media-server and failed with error-code 2811 and the following information:

08.04.2015 14:35:10 - begin Restore
08.04.2015 14:35:11 - restoring image IMAGENAME

SAP policy restore error(2811)

Found technote TECH193578, but this one is telling me that it only works for file_util, not rman_util.
