Is there route to trade-up / upgrade to 8-core? and coterminate maintenance.

Or is this question for Symantec reps to address....

Oracle clients failing backups with cannot connect on oscket

I need a solution

Hi,

I have a backup environment that runs on windows server 2003 (Master) and Windows server 2008 (Media servers) running RMAN based backups for Linux and Unix clients.

Recently the backups started failing with "cannot connect on socket" on these clients. The backups run at night and we don' troubleshoot the issues at night. When i look at them in the morning, i see that i can access client host properties fine from the master server admin console.

I have 2 similar issues for the past month. in both of them i see a pattern. just the first set of parallel jobs from just one node(2 node oracle cluster) fails. both of the failed policies run NBU 6.5 client. I am aware that this is way old software and i need to upgrade it. I am already on the track for upgrade for next week. But I am not sure if that is the reason why it is failing.

We pay for symantec support and I have engaged symantec for more than 3 weeks now to troubleshoot this one. they came back saying that socket's backend is file descriptor and we are running out of file descriptors at the start time of backups and thats what is causing these failures. our Linux and Unix experts(I am a windows system admin) see no evidence for the file descriptors to run out.

At this point I am at nowhere to go. Anyone who might have seen the same issue or a similar one, can you help me here please.

Specifics:

Master server : Windows server 2003 eNTERPRISE EDITION NBU 7.5.0.4

Media server :  Windows server 2008 enterprise edition NBU 7.5.0.4

Client 1 : Redhat 5.8 NBU 6.5

Client 2 : redhat 6.5  NBU 6.5

both clients run oracle RAC cluster

How to configure BE 2012 to skip corrupted file and move on to completion writing to tape ?

I need a solution

Hi,

I'm having monthly error that is regularly occurring in my backup server where I use Backup Exec 2012 to write some large files into tape with Backup Exec.

The file size is around 300 GB up to 500 GB in one single size and sometimes when the 3rd party backup software got some error in it, it will just delete the file and then replace it with different name. I guess this behaviour causing BE 2012 to stop the Write to tape process and stop the monthly tape backup job with the following error:

Add child org vcloud suite instance as the VM source for backup in Netbackup 7.6.0.1

I need a solution

Hi:

We have Symantic Netbackup version 7.6.0.1

We are trying to backup VM's that are part of vCloud Suite (formely vCloud Director). The VM's are created under a sub organization. Here is an example url for an Org name "OUR-GROUP-ORG" - https://[FQDN]/cloud/org/[OUR-GROUP-ORG]/#/orgUserHome?

I am adding the new vCloud Suite Instance IP from "New" option under:

Administration Console -> Media and Device Manager -> Credentials -> Virtual Machines.

Authentication using my credentails to my specific org is failing and I do infact have admin credentials to my org.

I don't see an option to input the ORG name in NetBackup UI.

My login cedentials have access to only the OUR-GROUP-ORG above.

a. What specific privilages do I need to access/backup the VM's under my org form NetBackup UI?

b. And should I be doing something else to configure this.

Thanks!

Backing up a virtualized WinNT4 Server

I need a solution

Dear Forum,

I have virtualized a mission critical Windows NT Server 4.0 member server (SP6a) system.

But my BEX 2014 SP2 will NOT back it up within vCenter (ESXi 5.0)

It hangs and locks and forces a hard takedown.

BUT the system runs fine in vCenter and on the network.

I was wondering if anyone would know if it is because BEX 2014 simply does not work on NT systems.

Any info you could offer would be appreciated.

Thanks.

exchange 2010 Last full backup field incorrect

I need a solution

Hi

I have a number of exchange 2010 databases clustered in a DAG and using netbackup 7.5 to back up the passive copies and VSS. The server is exchange 2010 / windows 2008 r2

I have noticed some of the exchange database (on the properties of databases in exchange console) shows last full backup few weeks old but netbackup has a more recent date of full back completion. After resorting the most recent full backup of a database (where netbackup full backup is newer than that stated on exchange last full backup field"  i found it does work and netbackup is correct and exchange las full backup field  is not.

This is inconsisent there are days when full backups work for a particular database where  netbackup and exchange database last full backup property match dates and some days they dont.

What i would like to know as i beleive backups are working

1. Has any one come across this process.

2. Does any one know what high level backup process for an exchange 2010 database includes e.g. what are the processes sending to VSS/exchange/netbackup that backups have been completed so that the exchange field last fullbackup knows its finished.

Hello,

I am using Netbackup Enterprise Server 6.5 on a Solaris 10 workstation.  When I try to do a restore the console turns white and shows a watch for the cursor after about a half an hour. I increased the INITIAL_MEMORY to 256M and the MAX_MEMORY to 1024M in the nbj.conf file, rebooted the suystem and tried another restore and got the same results.  The screen turns white and never recovers. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks.

Staging area for Exchange 2010 GRT recovery need more disk space

I need a solution

I am trying to recover a contact for a user and i am getting this error about the path for staging the temporary restore data running out of disk space. Our exchange database is not very big, only about 40GB, the temp area i set up for GRT has almost 100GB free, so why would i get this error? I am using a spare partition, separate from where BUE actually is installed, but on the same server. The Backup and Recovery GRT temp areas are set to E:\BUE-Recovery. I use tape for my backups. This is actually the first time i've tried restoring an individual mailbox item, and the first time i've tried restoring anything for Exchange 2010.

I am using Backup Exec 2012, my Backup Exec server setup is on a Windows 2008 R2 server, using LTO3 tapes in a Dell tape library. Exchange is 2010 sp3 on Windows server 2008 R2. I recently migrated from Exchange 2003 server a couple of months ago. Under my old Exchange 2003 server I've restored the mailbox store several times, and used exmerge to recover mailboxes, this is my first attempt to use GRT.

I am I miss reading the error message? Here is the exact error message from the log:

The path on the Backup Exec server for staging temporary restore data when restoring individual items from tape ran out of disk space. Either clear some disk space, or click Application Menu > Configuration and Settings > Global Job Defaults > Granular Recovery Technology, and enter a restore path that has more disk space.

I don't understand why there is no trace of proxy copies in netbackup's catalog ...

You'll find attached the blist result, the dbclient logs and the rman "list backup" command output.

The version of Netbackup is 7.6.0.4, the master is under Windows 2012 and the backup is stored on a MSDP also on a Windows 2012 server.

Thanks in advance for you help

W2008R2 BE2014, RHEL (5.11 Tikanga) V-79-57344-34040 error

I need a solution

Hello,

My BE 2014 media server is a Win 2008 R2 (physical) box. My backup that is failing with network issues is a RHEL 5.11 (physical) box.  The particular error is V-79-57344-34040.

Following the link does not offer much in the way of solution or insight. I have two backups running on this Linux box and one is now operational while the other fails with network loss.  The Linux box does have Oracle running on it, and sometimes the BE port is taken by Oracle.  My Linux admin has addressed that such that we are able to get one of the backups to function, however the other is failing and has since I Have upgraded the BE media server to 14.

He has upgraded the RALUS to what was included with the BE 2014 however that seemed to be older than the RALUS included with BE 2012.  We have attempted backups with both. We are now using RALUS 1786 and receiving one of two backups as successful.

Wondering what other things Linux admins have done to address this type of thing.

Thanks
Bob
