Netbackup 7.x per TB licensing

I need a solution

Dealing with a customer issue on the high backup volumes.
The customer owns License for only 30 TB. The current volume of backup has exceeded the licensing limit.

The point of clarification I require to have is on the licensing part.

  • When we say 30 TB of License, it is measured and/ or consumed by the backup volume taken by the NetBackup from the client? (I presume Yes)
  • Will this limit of licensing be measured and/ or consumed for archiving data to tape also? (I presume Yes)
  • What are the consequences faced, if the amount of backup volume exceeds above 30 TB without procuring extra per TB license?
  • What are the possible ways of reduction of backup volumes, considering there are both de-dup and non-de-dup data volumes being backed up?

BE 2012 - After migration, storage pools but no storage devices

I need a solution

Migrated our BE 2012 server using the steps in the article below.  We moved from a Win2K8 R2 Enterprise OS to Win2K8 R2 Standard OS for licensing reasons.  Everything seemed to migrate successfully except for the storage devices which are simply network drives/shares.  In the BE console on the new BE server, the storage pools, that were on the old BE server, are there and the properties of the storage pools show the related storage devices.  The problem is that the storage devices do not show up as individual devices on the storage tab of the BE console, so I cannot edit the properties or even use them with the migrated backup jobs.  I tried renaming the old BE server and taking it offline, then renaming the new BE server to the old BE server name, but I could not log into BE using the old or new name after that.  I put the new name back into place so now I'm back at square one again.  I thought about just configuring new storage devices with new names but I'm concerned about how that will affect my ability to restore existing backed up data that is on these drives.  Ideally, I would like to get some help on how I can get this migrated BE server to recognize the storage devices again.

I need a solution

After installing Symantec system recovery 2013 R3 Desktop, I tried to make a System recovery disk by starting the wizard.

However I get the error message: Failed to create a 'ImageSource' from the text 'pack://application:,,,,/Symantec.UI.WpfResources;component/images/error_16.gif'.

After closing the message the wizard will not startup again untill the computer is restarted. After a restart the message pops up again. I reinstalled alrady but without succes.

Does anybody have suggestions how to repair and be able to create a SSRD?

Very slow throughput in SLP duplicatkion jobs

I need a solution

Hi

Problem:

The throughput of the duplication phase is very slow and only one job per tape drive.  The total throughput to the tape library is about 120 MB/s avaraging about 30-40MB/s per tape drive.

____________________________________________________________________________

The SLP setup is:

Backup  ::        Local Data Centre [Source---10GbE--->Media Server, DD OST plug-in]---- Stretch LAN (2x10GbE) -----> Remote Data Centre [DataDomain]

Duplication ::   Remote Data Center [DataDomain ---10GbE---> Media Server ---8 GbFCP---> Tape Libvrary , 4x LTO-5 all 8 GbFCP]

The idea is to use the DataDomain OST to reduce the backup traffic across data centre link. The DD plug-in should eliminate a substantial amount of IP because we are getting an avarage of about 93% data reduction from deduplication. I would estimate the traffic reduction across the link to be about 15% of the original data size.   Once the data is staged on the remote Data Domain its copied from the to a tape library. All the processing for duplication job stays within the remote data centre.

The remote data centre media server and Data Domain have no resource problems (the max utilisation of any resource is < 12%) and the slowest data transfer interface is 8Gb/s (FCP).  The remote DC media has been clocked at running sustained backups almost 8GbE to the Data Domain.  Tapes are multplexed to 12 streams as the bulk of the data is squillions of smallish VM machines that don't have to be recovered in a hurry becasue its not production.

The deduplcation phase batches up the backup jobs as expected but it appears the number of primary backups per SLPbatch is huge.   This results in very long running single stream jobs  and a lot of duplication queing.

I need a solution

Hi everyone,

Can you confirm or deny that it is valid/possible to create secondary copies of backups from a dedupe, standard or advanced disk pool to tape.

We are finding that as we grow the time taken to rehydrate a deduped backup is so slow that the tape drives are running slow and the secondary copies are not happening qucik enough.

Thanks.

Backup Exec 2014 job hangs with the message "discovering devices"

I need a solution

Hi,

Running Backup Exec 2014 SP2 on a Windows 2008 R2 phyiscal server with a HP Robotic Library.    Upgraded from Backup Exec 2010 R3.  Jobs were running fine a few days after the upgrade, but now, after about 10 days after the upgrade, the backup job hangs always at a specific interval into the backup job (~302GB) with the "Discovering Devices" message.  It will just hang there forever.

I've tried repairing the install, repairing the DB, installing the microsoft medium changer driver, and running tapeinst.exe to re-apply the symantec drivers. power cycling the server and robotic library.... nothing works.  the job always hangs at the 302GB point.

Could this be something else with my robotic library?  After the upgrade, would i need to reset my media sets in any way?

Thanks,

Troy

I have a linux server I am trying to backup. I want to do Full and incremental backups. I understand that the archive bit isn't understood by Linux. From what I have gathered you need to go off a modified date mode to get incrementals to function. Can anyone explain to me how to get this working. I am looking for doc and can't really find anything.

Hi,

NetBackup was running perfeclty and suddenly it started to generate the error "NBU status: 96, EMM status: No media is available
unable to allocate new media for backup, storage unit has none available(96)". Some of the backups are running without any problem, while some other are persistently generating this error. Scratch pool has many available medias with robot type (TLD)  and tapes aren't showing any expiry date. I ran available_media  and I can see many available tapes as follows. Any help or recommendations will be highly appreciated!!

Thank you for your quick assistance!

LTFS Support for V-RAY

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

I would like to see support for LTFS, especially in the V-Ray edition of BackupExec.  If we need to restore a file from TAPE of a virtual machine based backup we must stage the entire VHD to hard disk before the file can be restored.  Some of our VHDs are greater than 1TB in size.  This means a VERY long wait to restore what is usually a few MB file.

If LTFS was an option for backups in BackupExec the VHD could be mounted directly from the tape and the file retrieved by directly seeking to that point in the VHD.  This would be possible since LTFS allows files on tape to be directly accessed vs needing to copy them back to hard disk first.

I see this as an immediate need for BackupExec going forward, especially in enviorments where full virtual disks are copied to tape.  Restores could go from hours to minutes and would provide much improved restore times from tape.

Hopefully my suggestion will show up as a feature in the near future.

Thanks,
Matt

I need a solution

I have a BE 2014 Media server that has been in production for about 8 months now.  I just received a notice saying that a trial license is about to expire.  It appears that when I deployed a remote agent to another server about 45 days ago, it added the Applications and Databases to the list of trial licenses.  Question is, in 12 days, what happens?  I do not use this type of agent.  I'm only using the Windows agent to back up flat files.  In my backup job, I specifically unchecked all MS SQL Server instances.  I've got a case open with support, but they really aren't getting my delima.  They want me to add one of my Applicaiton and DB agent licenses to this media server, but I do not have enough licenses to supply this, and I shouldn't have to since I'm not using this on this media server.

I need a solution

Hello all, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to do a "convert to virtual machine from point in time" in Backup Exec 2012.

I almost get through the whole setup sucessfully, I point to my ESX/Vcenter and choose a datastore.

Now on the final step, i click the browse button beside the "Full path of VMware tools ISO image:"

and i get the following error:

"Browse Failure

Failure to browse "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX"

The directory or file was not found, or could not be accessed."

Now the first thing i'm noticing is it is trying to browse our old domain/FQDN.

Is there any way of choose a new browse location?

I implied but failed to specify that the "Backup Method for Files" selected on the GENERAL tab was "Full-Copy the files" for the occasional USB jobs. To test this I ran the offsite job, ran the policy Daily Diff job, disconnected the USB rive, and restored some files from the Differential. To my surprise the files restored fine, and timestamps on the B2D files and IMG folders show that the DD looked back past the Full Offsite job to the previous successful scheduled Weekly Full backup. The restored files existed in the WF and were not changed for the DD. Undocumented feature of the AVVI?

I need a solution

Hi all,

I am really having bad experience with Symantec backup exec. I upgraded my CASO to from BE 12 to BE 14. The MMS remain as BE12. Lately the MMS failed to work with CASO and Symantec support advise us to upgrade the MMS to BE14. However we keep having problem in the upgrading process. The installer keep thinking that the BE12 doesn't have SP4 which is required from the upgrade.

Symantec support advise us to install BE 12, and do a fresh install of BE 14. I did that and loss everthing. Ok I have no choice to start from fresh and hope for a fresh start. However, the upgraded node stop working after joing to the CASO. The backup exec server service failed to start with the following error message

The Backup Exec Server Service did not start.  An internal error (-1) occurred in object 51

I did a net search, seems like remove the MMS feature and everything shall work. However I am unable to untick the option anymore.

I tried uninstall and do another clean install (deleting all symanec folders and registry). The problem persist. I am waiting for Symantec to contact me but it seems like I will lose my full backup windows this weekend.

Any advise from expert here?

thanks
