NBU 7.6 SLP Windows, can it reduce tape usage

I need a solution

I'm trying to come up with a way to reduce the number of tapes that are getting used for the duplication function in my SLPs.  I found I had a problem with different tape retention, I fixed that, but I'm still using 4 tapes a night, and none of them are full, in fact two of them only have 6 images each.  I've looked and there are duplications running all over the place at night,.  I was thnking that maybe if I create a window to run them in, it will combine more of them together and hopfully make better use of the tape.

I have three SLP, two for customer backups from two different disk pools, and one for the catalog backups that need to go offsite.  They all have the same retention level for disk and tape.  It used to only take one tape when it was configured to do the duplications from a special vault profile.  The problem there was it would fail or not duplicate some images, so I wanted to use the more failsafe SLP method to control the storage locations, replications to the DR site and the duplication to local tape.  It's working great, just using a lot more of the customers tapes.

Here is some data from the tapes from last night:  (see attched file)

One thing I noticed was that after things crossed over midnight and the date of the data expiration changes it used new tapes.  Would having the duplication all done after midnight make them all the same day?  I would be happy to get it down from 4 tapes to 2.

Any thoughts or comments?

Netbackup Catalog Backup to Disk

I need a solution

Anything to take into consideration when backing up the catalog to disk? I am currently running 7.6.0.2 and writing the catalog to tape, but I'd like to write it to disk so I can use AIR to replicate it to my DR site using an SLP. I just want to be sure there isn't anything I am missing or overlooking before cutting it over.

Backup exec branching from symantec?

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

I was listening to a tech news show the other day and they referenced BackupExec branching from symantec possibly under the old Veritas name. Just wanted to know if this was true or just a pile of FUD.

Plan to set semaphore values in netbackup servers

I need a solution

Team,

We have taken a reference from Symantec web link about setting on the semaphore values in Solaris 10 servers.

Could you please verify once and kindly suggest its backout plan on  solaris 10 servers.

https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH62633.html  >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> web link

For Sun servers, it has sol 10 does not require to set SEMMNS entries

First create a NetBackup project (id = 1000) and "tune" it.

/usr/sbin/projadd -U root -c "NetBackup resource project" -p 1000 NetBackup

To modify, the value:

/usr/sbin/projmod -a -K 'project.max-sem-nsems=(privileged,300,deny)' NetBackup

/usr/sbin/projmod -a -K 'project.max-sem-ops=(privileged,32,deny)' NetBackup

/usr/sbin/projmod -a -K 'project.max-sem-ids=(privileged,1024,deny)' NetBackup

Check the project created :

projects -l NetBackup
NetBackup
      projid : 1000
      comment: "NetBackup resource project"
      users  : root

      attribs :project.max-sem-nsems=(privileged,300,deny)' NetBackup’

                                       'project.max-sem-ops=(privileged,32,deny)' NetBackup’

                                       'project.max-sem-ids=(privileged,1024,deny)' NetBackup’

Now check whether vnetd and bpcd have the entries in SMF

svcs -a | egrep 'bpcd|vnetd'

online 08:30:10 svc:/network/bpcd/tcp:default
online 08:30:10 svc:/network/vnetd/tcp:default

Next, run the below command to import the changes into SMF.

#  inetconv -f
100235/1 -> /var/svc/manifest/network/rpc/100235_1-rpc_ticotsord.xml
Importing 100235_1-rpc_ticotsord.xml ...Done
bpcd -> /var/svc/manifest/network/bpcd-tcp.xml
Importing bpcd-tcp.xml ...Done
vnetd -> /var/svc/manifest/network/vnetd-tcp.xml
Importing vnetd-tcp.xml ...Done

4. Now arrange for SMF to launch the NetBackup daemon processes in the NetBackup project just created. This should be performed for both the vnetd and bpcd daemons.

Find the NetBackup vnetd service name:

# /usr/sbin/svccfg list | grep vnetd
network/vnetd/tcp

Check the current setting for project, 'default' is the default:

# svccfg -s network/vnetd/tcp listprop | grep project
inetd_start/project            astring  default

Change the service to run in the NetBackup project:

# svccfg -s network/vnetd/tcp setprop inetd_start/project=NetBackup

Verify the change is applied:

# svccfg -s network/vnetd/tcp listprop | grep project
inetd_start/project            astring  NetBackup

Follow the same steps for the bpcd daemon:

# svccfg list | grep bpcd
network/bpcd/tcp
# svccfg -s network/bpcd/tcp listprop | grep project
inetd_start/project            astring  default
# svccfg -s network/bpcd/tcp setprop inetd_start/project=NetBackup
# svccfg -s network/bpcd/tcp listprop | grep project
inetd_start/project            astring  NetBackup

Check the effects of the tuning on a running process with the prctl command.

# /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpps | grep bptm

#/bin/prctl -n project.max-sem-memory pid

5. Check the effects of the tuning on a running process with the prctl command. In this example, the bpps command on the media server shows the process id of bptm to be 3428 and the output of the prctl command shows the shared memory setting to be 8GB:

# /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpps | grep bptm
  root  3428     1   0 12:05:39 ?           0:00 bptm
# /bin/prctl -n project.max-shm-memory 3428
process: 3428: bptm
NAME    PRIVILEGE       VALUE    FLAG   ACTION       RECIPIENT
project.max-sem-memory
      privileged      8.00GB      -   deny                 -
      system          16.0EB    max   deny                 -

Confirm the current NetBackup project settings:

# projects -l NetBackup
NetBackup
      projid : 1000
      comment: "NetBackup resource project"
      users  : root
      groups : (none)
      attribs:‘project.max-sem-nsems=(privileged,300,deny)’

               ‘project.max-sem-ops=(privileged,32,deny)’

              ‘project.max-sem-ids=(privileged,1024,deny)’

Confirm the change and that the project contains just one tunable attribute.

# projects -l NetBackup | grep max-sem

Hello, I am implementing SAN client for a HP-UX server.  I have read Netbackup 7.6 Blueprints for SAN Client so there is recommended to be sure that the HBAs and their drivers must support 256K size buffers for data transfer.

I am working on HP-UX client so I would like to know if somebody knows how to validate that information.

BE 15, recent install running out of hard drive space on server

I need a solution

I just deployed a new server with BE 15 on it, running MS Server 2008. I'm backing up to a tape library, not to disk.  I've only been using it for about 6 weeks, and I've got less than 1GB on the server hard drive.  I expect all the space is being taken up by logs and such, how do I free up some space and change the settings so it doesn't crash the server?

I need a solution

Hi,

I have created a new backup server in our envirement. There are about 20 backup policies configured in our backup server. Most of the policy configured are as below.

Daily-run daily

Weekly-runs on every friday

Monthly-runs after every 4th week(friday)

when i created all policies the first backup which ran was monthlly. Also the daily backups are also running fine.

I have a question that in every 4th week backup do i have to make an exception manually in weekly backkup so that weekly backup dont run when monthly is schduled or this can be taken care by netbackup automatically.

I am using veritas master server 6.5.6 on a windows 2k8 Enterprise R264bit.

I know that 6.5.6 is out of support since 3 years but can't help it.

Thanks

Error code 13 for DB2 backup

I need a solution

Hello all,

I got a question here. There is a DB2 backup that running as online backup. Previously, the backup will take up to 9 hour to finish. So what we did is, we add the @set db2_sessions=OPEN 2 SESSIONS WITH 4 BUFFERS BUFFER 1024 in the script (as like shown in the sample) to shorten the backup time. But what happen is confusing where the backup gave error code 13 for jobs but at the parent job the job status is 0. And it showing that the backup fiinsh in 2 hours and also able to list the DB2 backup image using command "bplist -C <client> -S <master_server> -t 18 -R/".

So is it a successful backup or not. Is this some kind of bug?

Thank you

Unable to backup Exchange 2010 with BackupExec 2015

I need a solution

Hi Everyone,

We're running into a pretty major issue after an upgrade to BackupExec 2015 and we're pretty much at our wits end and hoping for a solution.

We were successfully using BackupExec 2010 to backup our Exchange 2010 configuration to tape. We were sold BackupExec 2015 and we've been attempting to implement it to simplify our backup configuration.

We built a new server and then started running our backups to BackupExec 2015. We have not been able to successfully backup our Exchange configuration since then and we're getting very frustrated.

We've had a ticket open with Symantec for weeks and the agents haven't been able to provide a resolution. They just had us run a debug and came back to us that our network drivers need to be updated. I checked the network drivers on both servers and they're both running the newest available driver. And again, we didn't have an issue with BackupExec 2010.

Here is what happens:

We have 3 datastores. One about 900GBs, one about 400GBs, and a new one that I created as part of this troubleshooting that's about 45GBs.

We've attempted to run a full backup against all three datastores and in every instance it fails at the "Consistency Check" phase for all three databases.

The error that we get is:

Job Completion Status

Job ended: Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at 7:05:23 AM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe000ff12 - A communications failure has occurred with an Exchange Store resource.
Final error category: Resource Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-65298

Errors

GRT backup set folder: \\.pdvfs\SERVERNAME\2\BEData\IMG000009
The consistency check of the snapshot for the Microsoft Exchange database Database was successful.
V-79-57344-65298 - The Exchange Store service is not responding. Backup set canceled.
V-79-57344-65072 - An error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec Remote Agent on the Backup Exec server. Ensure that the job options are correct, and then submit the job again. The backup set was not created.

So it backs up all of the data, passes the consistency check, and then fails on the step right after that, clears all of the data off.

This issue has literally been going on for weeks. Our Exchange setup is running on older hardware and I'm getting very nervous about this issue.

We've attempted disabling GRT. We've tried disk storage, deduplication disk storage, virtual tape storage, etc.

We're successfully backing up Oracle, SQL server, and flat files to this new BackupExec server without issues.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

SSR recovery failed with missing MBR

I need a solution

Hi, we are testing SSR recovery on some Windows servers. The SSR is SSR 2013 R2 and the servers to recover are Windows Server 2008 R2 Std SP1.

In each of the servers, there is a 100MB system reserved partition and C drive. Both are on the same disk. We backed up the server and then tested to restore to itself. However, after the recovery, when the restored server boot up, it shows file \boot\BCD is missing. When I press Enter, the restore server will reboot.

I think this may be related to some options that we selected during recovery. I see there are three options to select: Restore master boot record, restore original disk signature, set drive active.

For the system reserved partition and C drive, which options should we select for the recovery?

if the error we saw does not related to these options, how to troubleshoot from here?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Folks,

I currently have a problem to copy the files of my clients to the server, the connection is very slow.

I'm taking hours to copy a 1GB file to the server, I changed some settings in Profile in throttling back but I believe there is something that can be improved.

What is the best setup I can do on Backup Throttling regardless of the environment that I have?

This is my configuration:
