  • 09/13/15--06:07: restore of a virtual server
  • I need a solution

    Hello,

    I am trying to restore a VMware Virtual server. This a legacy server which we want to migrate to a newer OS. For testing purpose we need a copy of the server.

    We brought down the server started the backup using the vmware method. A snapshot was made and the backup started. When the snapshot creation was done we brought up the server again. After some time the backup finished succesful.

    Then I started a restore of the VM. A couple of month ago I did this the same way and I succeeded to restore the VM. Now we need a new copy of the production and we tried doing the same. Now the resore fails. What happens is I start the restore after a succesful backup. The first step is that Netbackup creates a VM, I ve seen this step and useally this takes a few minutes. With this restore it finishes after two hours and then we have a VM without any data in it, it just does the first step, creating a vm then it ends with "Status = VMware policy restore error, 2820".

    I am tryng to do a relocated restore in the same VMware cluster on a different ESX-server, a different name, and a different datastore. We use Netbackup 7.6.0.1. I already enabled verbose logging on the Master server and the media server, but I can't find what prevents us from restoring the VM.

    Whare should I start looking?

    R

    I need a solution

    Hello.

    I was recently informed that network traffic between 2 media servers was taking up a lot of bandwidth between 2 Data Centers. Here is the setup:

    2 sites: Prod and DR. Master and a media server in Prod; media server writes to a Data Domain (via boost/OST). In DR, I have a media server, also backing up to a local DD, as well as a tape library. All servers are RH linux, running NBU 7.5.0.6.

    Pretty standard config, using SLPs to duplicate as follows (the "-->" indicates and indent):

    PROD-SLP

    Backup to PROD-DD

    --> Duplication to DR-DD

    --> --> Duplication to Tape

    DR-SLP

    Backup to DR-DD

    --> Duplication to PROD-DD

    --> Duplication to Tape

    So I should be writing to tape from the DR backup on the DD. I also have "Use only the following media servers" checked off in the Storage Unit setup for the DD disk pool.

    The traffic can't be the DD-to-DD duplication, as those go over a different port. What I've noticed in the duplication to tape jobs, is that NBU will assign either media server to the DR-DD to read from. So in essence, the cause of all this network traffic could be the PROD media server reading and hydrating the data from the DR DD, then sending it to the DR media server for tape out. Any way to restrict this to only read from DR DD from the DR media server?

  • 09/14/15--09:11: External server backups
  • I need a solution

    I've been fortunate enough to only have to worry about data that is internal to our network but we are about to deploy an external web presence that is going to include an IIS and SQL server in an external domain.  I am being told that the sql server will need hourly backups due to it containing transaction data that does not get transferred to the internal network until the end of each day.

    So i am trying to figure out how to accomplish backing this data up without (my portion) creating a security issue comming back into the private network.  We have already chatted with cisco and microsoft on securing the transfer of the sql data but the backup side of things was not discussed.

    I worry about putting a client on the sql server and then opening the common ports so that it can talk to my netbackup system.  Its not necessarily the data i am worried about comprimising, but more the connections i will have open internally.

    I need a solution

    I need a solution with NetBackup to protect 44 DB instances that are running on 3 hosts with OS version RH 6.5, these hosts are connected through iSCSI to an HP 3PAR and an EMC V-MAX, we need to execute backups to disk, and if possible using NBU deduplication technology. We need to confirm that we can implement the MSDP on the iSCSI storage systems, or need a separate SAN-FC MSDP. I'm shure that the 3 hosts cannot be configured as SAN Clients, only LAN clients, and if we can´t use the existing storage as MSDP pools we will have to include NBU Appliances on the solution. any ideias? Thanks.

    I need a solution

    Hi,

    I have a library with 4 LTO5 tapes running on a TS 3310 Library. The jobs were configured to be NDMP backups about a month ago. For some reason, backup jobs and restore jobs started hanging 3 days ago. By hanging, I mean the job status gets stuck at either queued, loading tape, discovering resources, etc for hours. If I hit cancel, it gets stuck at cancel pendingl. The normal cycle to "fix" it is:

    1) Stop backup exec services

    2) powercycle the library

    3) reboot the Backup Exec server (sometimes necessary)

    If the steps above are not done, the tape used during the backup or restore job gets stuck in the tape drive and it can't be removed via the BE console.

    It cannot be removed using the library GUI as well and it throws an error saying: The Slot is inaccessible. A host issued a SCSI Prevent/Allow media Removal command which is preventing the drive from unloading a tape cartridge.

    But what I am most interested to find out is what this icon means. It is under the active and scheduled jobs column

    ErrorBE11.JPG

    I noticed that of all the drives that encountered the hanging job and stuck tape issue, only drive 3 has this icon. Only drive 3 seems to be unusable at the moment for both backup and restore jobs. I still have problems with the other drives but drive 3 is completely dead at this point.

    Note that all 4 drives are detected by device manager.

    I need a solution

    Hello,

    I need to duplicate some backup images to a standalone tapedrive. I found posts how to add the tape and to label the tape with vmadd and bplabel.
    Also I found how to start duplicate the data to the tape in the stand alone tapedrive. I added two tapes with vmadd and bplabel to the tapedrive.

    But my tapedrive is an LTO2, which is native 200Gb and 400Gb compressed. The images I need to write to tape is about 460Gb. When the bpduplicate job is at about 370Gb the job just crashes and it doesn't let me add a new empty tape.

    Any ideas?

    Rob

    I need a solution

    Hi All,

    I am trying to restore data that is on 2 Tapes which were written to by using a Dell Powervault 124T.  We currently use Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition.

    The Tapes have no barcode however the AutoLoader does have a barcode reader.

    When we Inventory and Catalogue the tapes they are being given a Media ID however when we come to then restore the data we get an error saying that the Restore failed due to Invalid Physical Volume Library Media Identifier.  Above the error it notes a Media GUID which doesnt match the Media ID the Tape has been given.  See Images below.

    picture1.png

    picture2.png

    How do we get them to match or are we inventorying or cataloging the tapes incorectly?  We have stopped the services and renamed the catalogs folder numerous times and this doesnt seem to fix the issue.  We can see the Backup Set on the tapes and browse the folder structure however we always get the above failure error.

    Any assistance would be extremely helpful as we have been trying to restore this data for 1 week and time is now of the escense?

    Thanks

    Ben

    I need a solution

    At one of our other sites, we have a server with BE 2012 (A) and another server with the agent (B). At the beginning of August, it stopped backing up the B server. It says it's licensed, but not installed (which it is) and there's no maintenance license. I'm confused.

    The job failed with the following error: Before you can back up this source, you must purchase and install a license for the appropriate Backup Exec agent. See the Job Log for details.

    I don't know if this is supported or not but I'm trying to install NetBackup on a hyper-v VM and attach an IBMTS2900 to that VM.  I don't know if the pass through will work.  Is the installation of Netbackup 7.6 Master/Media server supported on a 2012 r2 Virtual Server?  The only reason why I was trying not to install 7.6 on the 2012 R2 host is the event we would want to move to Server Core.
