I need a solution

Dear all,

Good Day……

One of my valuable customer wants to buy backup exec 15 software.

He wants to install backup exec 15 software on virtual server (windows server 2008 or 2012R2)

And HP tape library will be directly connected with backup exec 15 server. As per my knowledge tape library must be directly connected with backup exec server.

So my query is if backup exec 15 software is installed on virtual platform (OS: Windows server 2008/2012) then LTO5 tape library is supported or not supported on backup exec server in virtual platform??? Please confirm us.

Also customer has below mentioned requirements:

  1. Take backup & write to LTO5 Tape Library running from SYMANTEC BACKUP EXEC (VM) Server.
  2. 3 Agent’s fully capable to take Backup from ORACLE, Any DB, VM, FILES, & store as required.
  3. Need a DC-DR, VM, and Backup System Solution using backup exec solution.

So, give a feedback on above requirements also.

Best regads ,

How to customize output in command line?

I need a solution

Hi guys!

I wish to know if I can edit the standard output or the user mode output option in a command used in command line. For instance, I use "bpimagelist -bakcupid backupid" in command line on the server to identify in what tape is located certain image, but I did it on a batch with around 200 images at time, and report the logs in specified archive by me. So, if I could edit the output to show only some information about every image on the batch this would make my work of analyze so much easier. I already tried to use the -l, -L or even -U options, but any of them make the output or too confuse (for -l), too long (for -L) or, in the worst case, too short (for -U).

Anybody can help me?

NBU master server CPU 100% usage

I need a solution

Hi Team,

We have NBU 7.6.0.3 hosted on Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise edition with SFWHA we run about 12000 jobs on master server, the infra has both Tape library and DD.

We are recently observing that the CPU usage on master server is about 100% during backup window.

We are now getting lot of SQL backup failures due to this.

Is it normal NBU behaviour or is it overloaded , is there a way to tackle this.

Kindly Help.

Exchange job queues and does nothing, no alerts

I need a solution

I have four jobs. Two jobs run without issue, the third one failed and then the fourth one timed out.  I can't open those 2 jobs' log, get some error.  I see a mesage on the history that says e0008821 - Job was recovered as a result of Backup Exec RPC service starting.  No user action is required.
But I do not see this BE-RPC service anywhere.

I tried running that 3rd job (the exchange job) to a scratch tape just now.  It queues and sits there.  No errors or alerts or events on either server.  The tape drive doesn't pull a tape from the library.  I can't cancel the job, turns out the BE engine service is frozen.

I think this job causes that service to freeze in such a way that it doesn't crash out.  If I don't go in there every day to restart the servies, all jobs fail the following night.  What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Exclude certain Error codes from generating SNMP traps - Ops Center & HPOM

I need a solution

Hello Folks,

We have been in the process of integrating NetBackup backup failure alerts with HP OML for auto-creation of the Incident tickets and get it auto-assigned to our operations ticketing queue.

We have got some success in this integration, but there is still some kind of refinement we would like to do in that, as in for example, certain error codes should not generate SNMP traps and not being sent to HP OM and auto-generation of incident tickets for those can be avoided, for example, error code 1, 150 e.t.c to name of few. We just do not wish all backup-failure error codes to auto-generate an Incident ticket for us.

How we can achieve that please ?

NetBackup : 7.6.0.1 ( In cluster)

Master Server/Ops-center server: Windows 2008 R2-64-bit Enterprise

Ops-Center: 7.6.0.1

HP OML ( HP Operations Manager for Linux) : 9.10

bpexpdate versus nbholdutil

I need a solution

Hi, I am looking for some more information on nbholdutil as I have not been able to find much information on it.

What i'm trying to do: Suspend images stored on tape by backup ID indefinitely until legal lets me know. I know how to do this but would like some info on the difference between bpexpdate and nbholdutil.

So it appears there are 2 options, the traditional bpexpdate where I can just manually set a date far out in the future and continually do so, or from what I gathered from reading the commands guide, nbholdutil will do the same thing but hold the images indefinitely. Note* I do not have the OpsCenter Search and Hold License so I am strictly using the command line version. Below is the part i'm a bit confused on:

NetBackup Search provides two methods for placing a hold on a backup image:

  • Legal hold - You create a legal hold from Symantec NetBackup OpsCenter based on the results of a saved search.

  • Local hold - You create a local hold from the command line interface of the NetBackup master server.

So using the command line I put all my images on hold using this command:

nbholdutil -add -holdname <name> -backupid <backupID> -allcopy

Questions:

  • Are there any differences between the "Legal" and the "Local" hold other than how you perform the hold? (GUI vs CLI)
  • Is placing a hold on an image effectively the same thing as using bpexpdate and setting the date out, other than the fact that nbholdutil is an indefinite hold?
  • Are there any caveats to using nbholdutil?

thanks!

Tape Alert Error - Backup Exec 2010

I need a solution

We are using Symantec Backup Exec 2010.  We do a nightly backup.  We have 11 tapes that we rotate through, 1 tape per day.  The tapes are numbered 1-11.

About month ago, we noticed that when tape 8 would run, we would get a Tape Alert Error with the message, "Critical - Your data is at risk." Event ID 65314.

I purchased some new tapes and replaced Tape 8.  The next time Tape 8 came up in the rotation it produced the same error with a brand new tape.  Every other day runs fine.  It seems that every time the backup comes upon what should be Tape 8's day to run it throws that error.

Given I have tried new tapes in that position in the rotation, and they fail too, it must be something in the software triggering it.

Can someone recommend a solution?

Relationship between B2D 'Concurrent Write Sessions' setting and Duplicate to Tape Operations

$

I need a solution

Curiosity question - the answer to which may have an impact on Backup Performance

BE 2014 (still) - I am noticing that if I have a B2D volume configured with [Concurrent Write Sessions] set to [1] using the Storage --> Properties page in the BE GUI it seems that Duplicate to Tape operations (which as far as the B2D volume is concerned should only be a read operation) prevents other backup jobs from beginning until the duplication completes.

For example (using actual historical data):
I have a backup job that is scheduled to begin at 6:30 AM with a linked 'Duplicate to Tape' operation upon completion.  The job runs for about 20 minutes, ending at roughly 6:50 AM.  The linked 'Duplicate to Tape' operation then begins immediately and lasts for just about 10-12 minutes, ending at roughly 7:02:37 AM.
The next backup job which is utilizing the same B2D volume is scheduled to begin at 7:00 AM actually begins at 7:02:39 - a few seconds after the 'Duplicate to Tape' step of the previously scheduled job utilizing this B2D volume completes.

(The serial nature of the backup scheduling is by design as it provides the best performance for our iSCSI storage, I have several B2D volumes configured to provide parallelism by way of multiple volumes rather than multiple write operations to the same volume, this methodology provides greater available disk queue depth at the iSCSI level over a single volume.)

In theory, the 'Duplicate to Tape' operation should only be reading the backup sets from the B2D voume and writing to the Tape media, so shouldn't necessarily count as a 'write operation' as far as the B2D volume is concerned.

I'm curious as to why the dupliacate operation seems to be considered a 'write' operation as far as the B2D volume is concerned and seems to be causing subsequent backup jobs to be delayed while the 'Duplicate to Tape' completes.
(Duplicate to Tape also verifies the backup sets during the duplicate job so as to allow DLM to clean up the B2D volumes faster.  Again, this should only be a 'read' operation as far as the B2D volume is concerned, so in theory, should not be preventing subsequent backup jobs from 'writing' to the B2D volume.)

(The delay in this example is only a few minutes, but can be greatly compounded over time.)

Random thoughts, personal experience, insights and ramblings are all appreciated,
                      Thank you,

Exchange 2013 GRT Errors

I need a solution

Hi,

I'm rolling out Exchange 2013 and the first challenge is to successful GRT back up. Every mailstore throws the following error.

V-79-57344-4617 - The backup-to-disk folder or the path for staging temporary data on the Backup Exec server must be on an NTFS volume. Do any of the following, and then submit the job again:
- Create a new backup-to-disk folder on an NTFS volume - Change the location of the current backup-to-disk folder to an NTFS volume - Change the path for staging temporary data. Click Tools, click Options, and then click Backup to change the path.

-BE 2014 server is 2008R2
 -Exch 2013 server is 2012 R2
 -I'm backing up to tape.
-The local staging disk is NTFS and has plenty of space.
-My Exch 2010 GRT backups to tape are working on the same BE 2014 server.

Any ideas are appreciated!!

Thanks!

Throttle bandwidth on VMware backups

Any ideas how you would throttle the bandwidth of a media server that only does VMware VADP backups i.e. none of the clients have an agent installed.

In the master server properties you can throttle bandwidth of the clients of a designated media server. My understanding is the throttling is done on the client-side via the NBU agent.

The idea here is to restrict the bandwidth leaving a media server that goes through a physical firewall port.  Current throttling is by limiting job count on policies.
