Replication Director - NetApp Filers

$

I need a solution

I have a NBU 7611 environment with Windows Master Server and 5220 appliances, all running well.  We also have a number of NetApp filers, and are looking to manage these with the Replication Director component of NBU.

When testing I noticed that whilst Replication Director functioned perfectly well on one of our filers it gave errors when vaildating the policy for the other filers.  To cut a long story short this turned out to be due to the NetApp NFS license being installed on the filer that worked OK and not being installed on all the other filers (which were failing to validate the policy).

We do not use NFS on the filers, so I don't understand why we should need the NFS license !!  When we added the NFS license to the filers which were failing validation they now work perfectly.  however - we have a number of filers which are not licensed for NFS and we don't want to have to buy the NFS license simply to use Replication Director.

It is an NDMP policy type and works fine as long as the NFS license is installed on the filer.  If the license isn't installed the policy will not validate or run.

Why does Replication Director require NFS on the filer ?

Any ideas ?

Tape backups not showing in BAR

I need a solution

I noticed in the BAR when Im browsing the backups that my duplicated jobs to tape are no longer showing as a source to restore from.  I spoted this because my tape jobs have a 7 year retention and my standard backups have 1 year.  Starting in febuary none of the 7 year jobs are showing.  This is around the same time i bumped my primary backups from 3 months to 1 year in the SLP.

I ran a report on the past tape #s and images are on the tapes with the 7 year retention.

Are they not showing because vault is not working properly or am i just not understanding how this works and because my primary backup has a 1year retention the actual tape job wont show until the 1yr retention expires.

How to reset schedule after failure

$

I need a solution

I understand, now, how to manage the number of tries for a backup over a given period (global attributes in host properties of the master server).  However when I am dealing with a failure and have resolved it I can't find a way to reset the policy so it will get back on the schedule.   I am having to wait until the backup attempt interval is up (in our case that's 12 hours).

Here's my example...  My master server global attributes are set to 2 tries per 12 hours (I think those are defaults but I certainly don't know).  I have an archivelog backup of an oracle database that runs hourly.... and  must or I will fairly quickly run out of space on the volume (lets assume I can't add any disk).   Recently this backup failed... twice.... which is the maximum per 12 hours so the schedule will not pick back up even on a successful manual run.   Since I really can't wait the 12 hours for it to pick back up on the schedule, I'd like to reset the schedule so that it will pick back up right now.   However I can't find any sort of command that resets the tries or simply gives the policy a 'clean slate'.

So... what's the best thing to do here?  I really don't want to change the global policy for my job that failed, but perhaps that's the best approach?

I need a solution

I was wondering if this has been seen before.  I have Netbackup Client on 2012r2 hyper-visor and I'm trying to backup a VM running Server 2003.  After 200GB of backup the VM server frooze and locked up(no rdp or from console just gray screen).  I canceled the backup and the VM server came back.  The VM is running a realtime application.  Would it be best to shutdown the 2003 vm and do backup while off?  I havent had a problem with 2012 or 2008 vms.

thanks,

Symantec Backup 2012 Disaster Recovery to different hardware, or other testing routes

I need a solution

Okay, I know this post is going to sound like a broken record, but I have searched and read through other threads but it seemed to either not address or solve the issue directly or give an unclear explanation that pertained to that specific persons problem. Here it goes and please accept my apologies if this post seems so redundant.

Okay so I have a HP Proliant DL380 G4 server running Symantec Backup Exec 2012 (I know, I know, it's an old server lol) and I'm used to using Puredisk but it seems quite easy administering backups with SBE 2012 UNTIL! it's time to do recovery testing. I noticed I didn't have an adequate testing environment for my recovery tests, so I grabbed the best computer I could find which is a Dell Tower 5810 w/ a 1TB backup drive and a 250GB boot drive which isn't setup for RAID. So I tried doing a recovery of my HP Proliant server to my Dell Tower and I was met with a number of obstacles that indicated my recovery might go so smoothly, I will list those messages at the end. A little FYI - I do full SDR backups on our server here, the server is setup in a RAID 0 with a C: and D: drive and the Dell Tower is booting AHCI. Basically, I am not able to recover my backups to the Dell Tower. It's obvious that either this scenario won't work at all or I will need to do quite a bit of tweaking to make my test recoveries successful. I would really like to be able to find a way to recovery to the Dell Tower because if that HP server did crash then that may very well be all I have to use. So I have two questions if anyone can please answer:

1. How can I get this scenario to work; how can I get my recovery my backups to different hardware?

2. In the future, what is the best test environment to setup for conducting test recoveries?

Thanks, thanks, thanks, to anyone who can help me with this. It has been a headache going on three days trying to figure this out on my own. Below are the messages I ran into while trying to test-recover my backups to a different computer:

- Your computer may not start successfully, if your system or boot volume resides on one of the hard disks attached to an inactive controller

- Drivers for one or more controllers are not installed. The computer may not start because the required system...

- If the recovered computer contains multiple hard disks, ensure that the computer's BIOS is configured to start the computer from the hard disk that contains the Windows Operating System

- invalid partition table (I received this message after rebooting from a restore)

Our VTL Drives goes down

I need a solution

Hello

We have a VTL drives goes down issue with our NBU 7.6.0.3 on windows cluster. The VTL is connected to ndmp. Last time the issue was fixed by reconfiguring the storage but the issue has occurred again.

The time when it goes down we see the below event log

Event ID: 2650
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: servername.test.com
Description:
ndmp_public_session_create() failed: Timeout waiting for connected message from NDMP serve

As per the below article it is pointing towards hardware communication side.

http://www.veritas.com/docs/000034577

Can somebody tell me which logs needs to be checked on both nbu and VTL side to conclude where the issue lies.

Thank you

Backup Jobs von Ethernet auf Fibre Channel umstellen

Hallo,

Bin allerdings ein newbie was FibreChannel anbelangt.

Archive Bit vs. Modified Date - what is difference?

$

I need a solution

I found this article:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/wha...

but was wondering if there was anything else to it.

I notice that there is no longer a "copy" function (or i missed it). You used to be able to do a full backup "copy" mode where it ignored the archive bit - the "copy" backup backed everything up regardless of bit, it ignored it on backing up, and it didnt flip it once the file was copied. I don't see that option anymore.

Is there any difference between the two methods, other than described in that linked article?

I'm inclined to continue using the archive bit as the one sentence from the link has me a little squeamish about using "Modified Date":

"In case of files which are renamed, copied or whose attributes are changed, currently, you need to add these files manually in the backup job."

maybe the archive bit ALSO isn't flipped for these procedures, but i think i'll still just use the archive bit.

any thoughts or opinions?
