Backup Exec 2010 does not use Scratch Media, Jobs are in queued state

I need a solution

Hi,

on some of our Backup Exec Servers (newest Patch level) i have the issue that imported tapes (which were erased by another BE Installation before) won't be used by BE2010.

I moved the tapes to Scratch, but BE still wont use them to overwrite. The Media Protection Policy is set to partial. I already tried all the options but nothing helps.

As far as i know BE always has to overwrite Scratch Media? Or am i wrong with that?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

bonjour,

Upgrade BE media server OS to Win2012 R2

I need a solution

Hello,

We run our BE media server on Windows Server 2008 R2. BE was recently upgraded to version 2014 with latest SP and hotfix.

I would like to upgrade the media server to Windows Server 2012 R2 as a in-place upgrade. Is that a straghtforward process and supported with Backup Exec already installed? I have two tape drives attached to the server and I assume there should be no driver issue.

Thanks,

Edy

0xe000ff12 Communications failure with Exchange Store Reource

I need a solution

I am evaluating Backup Exec 2014 for another company i help support, and i am getting 0xe000ff12 communication failure errors with the Exchange 2010 Information Store.

This Exchange 2010 environment is running on Windows server 2008 R2, the Backup Exec Media server is also on a Windows 2008 R2 server. We backup to Dell storage array with about 13TB of disk space. This is not a new array it has been in place for about 7 years and is also being used by our copy of Microsoft Data Protection Manager. We are evaluating BUE 2014 because our copy of DPM doesn't support backing up Exchange 2010 on our 2008 R2 server. We have the information store separated into 2 databases to help manage the size. One copy is only about 5GB and is being backup successfully, the other copy is about 300GB and is the one we are having trouble backing up.

The job fails after about 5 hours and the 240GB mark with this e000ff12 communication error. Now i've always used the Exchange Agent, but the job details don't explicitly state that the Exchange agent is being used it just shows in the log "Agent Used:YES", also "Advanced Open File Option Used : Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service". Later in the Job History log I then see "Agent Used: No" and "Advanced Open File Option Used: No". I check for errors with VSS, and i don't see any. It looks like something is interfering with the Exchange agent much later in the job, but i can't find out what.

I don't have any other jobs running at this time and database maintenance starts at about 4:00AM, this job fails at around 3am. Today i changed the maintenance to 9:00am.

So what could be causing this job to fail about 3/4 of the way through??

Thanks

B

Assigning Tape Label

I need a solution

I am new to Symantec Backup Exec 2014. Here is the scenario:

I already labeled a tape named "SERVER_FULL_Weekly". Now, I want my full backup job to search for tape named "SERVER_FULL_Weekly" before it runs, but I cannot see where to set this option.

I tried to go to Backup Options > Storage > Full, under Storage: there are only 3 options

1. Any tape cartridge Storage

2. Any Disk Storage

3.Tape drive 0001 ("Label of tape that is currently inserted on the tape drive")

Please help.

Thanks,

Rommel

5220 2.6.0.2->2.6.1.1 two failures so far

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

/comentary

After the last few upgrades I'm beginning to think that Symantec/Veritas is more interested in continuous "new shiny features" to attract Managers rather than fixing and perfecting last week's shiny.  The quality and the Admin Friendly quotients have both fallen off a cliff...

/end comentary

So far the only one of my Appliances that I've attempted the 2.6.0.2->2.6.1.1 upgrade on has failed twice.

The first time due to not enough unallocated space in the BASE unit (why can't they check for that in the pre-check and also flag it in the Release Notes?).

Support was able to find that error, alert me to it, and point me to the KB on resizing and moving stuff around.

After I did some serious resizing and moving on all my Appliances (proactive moves) I tried this one again...

Now I've also got the dreaded "Command install_NB_rpm failed to execute." failure.  I'm waiting for Support to tell me which of their EEBs are somehow incompatible.

List of installed EEBs:
SYMC_NBAPP_EEB_ET3487431-2.6.0.2-4
SYMC_NBAPP_EEB_ET3512671-2.6.0.2-1
SYMC_NBAPP_EEB_ET3535636-2.6.0.2-1

DFSR backups on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

I need a solution

I have a peculiar problem where DFSR is backed up successfully on one server, but fails on the other one.  I created a separate policy for DFSR for the working server, but did not exclude DFSR on the client for either policy.  So I copied those policies for a new server running the same OS and NetBackup versions and SCC backup fails on the DFSR data.  As far as I can tell, settings are pretty much the same on both servers.  I was just curious if anyone had seen this behavior and determined the cause.  I've read the TECHNOTEs for DFSR backups, but nothing seems to apply.

Netbackup Client 7.1.0.4 backing up Windows 2012 Domain Controller

I need a solution

Hello

I'm trying to determine if by using the Netbackup Client 7.1.04, I can backup my Windows 2012 Domain Controllers?

The information I've found is confusing at best:

NBU version 7.1.0.4

Please use the following link to obtain the 7.1.0.4 version that supports , MS Windows 2012 server .

https://symbeta.symantec.com/callout/?callid=0A794F29873A424C80273A3019D704AB

You should receive an email from symbeta@symantec.com with a link for download.  For any questions, please click on the "contact us now" button.

This 7.1.0.4 install has numerous limitations and this client package DOES NOT support the following functionality/capabilities of the NetBackup Windows client:

-System State Backup. Only file system backup will work properly. So data backup is a “yes”, but DR is a “no”.

-Granular backup of Active Directory is not supported with this package, however non-Granular Active Directory and full backup are supported.
[Not sure what this means, can we backup our AD or not?]

-Restoring files backed up from an NTFS file system, to an ReFS file system, and vice versa is not supported.

-Agent support is not available with this package. For example, no SQL Server agent support.

-There is no BMR support with this package.

-There is no NBAC (VxAT/VxAZ) support with this package.

-No new Windows 8/2012 features are supported with this package. For example, no support for NTFS deduplication file system.

This package provides basic backup and restore functionality for file systems (NTFS and ReFS) only and can be used in NetBackup domains running NetBackup 7.1.0.4 and above

PLEASE NOTE :  The same rules of patch levels between the Master / Media/ and clients still apply.

Please see : http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH29677 - Version Compatibility

Thanks with any help figuring out if we can authoritatively backup our Windows 2012 Domain Controllers and AD using the 7.1.0.4 Server/Client.

I need a solution

People,

I've got Backup Exec 2012 running on Windows Server 2008 R2 using HP MSL3 tape library, somehow I got this backup report:

(Server: "PRODBU01") (Job: "Monthly Backup Job 1 (1 - 12)-Full") Job 'Monthly Backup Job 1 (1 - 12)-Full' has reported Multiple Tape Alerts on Server 'PRODBU01'. Please refer to job log BEX_PRODBU01_01024.xml for more details.

and this one is logged in the event viewer:

Log Name: Application
Source: Backup Exec
Date: 14/04/2015 7:07:59 AM
Event ID: 57665
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: PRODBU01.domain.com
Description:
Storage device "Tape drive 0001" reported an error on a request to write data to media.

Error reported:
0x17.

but why the job retried and running again after retry ?

is there any problem with my Tape Library hardware or this is just a problem with Corrupted files cannot be verified after it is written to the tape ?

I need a solution

We are currently running 7.5.0.3 Enterprise with one master server and one media server. Both servers are windows 2008R2

I have purchased new hardware to replace the media server and would like to install windows 2012R2 on it. What licenses do I need to upgrade if any? Is theere upgrade pricing (we don't have maintenance). My vendor has only provided me with full license prices for master and client, but I don't see anything about a media server?

Thanks

Inventory Window does not show any robots in Java Console

I need a solution

Hi Experts,

Environment:
Master and Media servers running on Linux, NBU version 7.6.0.2.
Tape Libraries: StorageTek SL3000, Firmware 3.61

We recently replaced LTO4 Tape Drives with LTO6 Tape Drives on our 2 STK SL3000 Tape libraries. The upgrade of Drives was done 1 week apart for each library. First upgrade went ahead without any issues but after the upgrade of 2nd library we were not able to scan tape drives and Robots. We Engaged Symantec Support and they did some changes in the Device Mappings files. After the change in the device mappings file, cople of tries failed but then in the 3rd try Robots, Drives and Storage units were configured. We performed the inventory and every thing looked fine.

Couple days later we had to run an inventory and when we clicked Robot > Inventory Robot from Java Console, the window appeared only with the master server name in it and without any robots showing in the window. We tried Netbackup Administration Console and tried the inventory, it did show both the robots and was able to run the inventory.

During the troubleshooting we have updated the Device Mapping file to latest version 1.23. Checked all media servers for consistency.

This issue has been going on for almost 3 weeks and Symantec has not yet able to resolve it.

Any help will be appreciated.

Other symptoms:

1. Robot Diagnostics fails for 1 library (all 4 steps).
2. Robtest from the media servers controlling the library is successful.
3. Scan -changer shows the robot
4. Scan for a drive via Wizard configures the drive as standalone.
5. PC running Java Console is out of equation, issue is persistent from any PC.

Backup Exec 2014 digest powershell script.

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

I was tired of getting close to 100 backup status reports each day, so I wrote a quick digest script and disabled notifications on all my jobs. I'm not very good with Powershell, so it's pretty ugly, but it works, and I get a nice quick digest that tells me if I have anything to really address.

Hopefully this helps someone who is struggling onder the weight of backup reporting get out from under the weight.

STUFF -

1. This script only cares about errors, cancellations, successes and exceptions. If you want more things, just add more tables.

2. Only verified on Powershell 3.0

3. I run this as a system task on a daily basis on my BE server.

4. YMMV, but they are just GET cmdlets, you aren't doing anything but gathering data and emailing it.

Credit - "sendemailstatus" is a function I picked up from -Mark- on technet because I like the emails it sends.

BE 12.5d - Slow backup jobs to tape after changing servers

$

I need a solution

Hi Everyone,

I'm experiencing extremely slow job rates and other odd issue's after changing our server that hosts Backup Exec.

Previous setup - no issues:

Backup Exec 2010
Dell Server - PowerEdge 2950 - Windows Server 2003
Dell PowerVault 124T

New setup - Slow job rates when backing up to tape:

Backup Exec 12.5d
HP Server - DL 380 - Windows Server 2008 R2
H800 PERC controller card
Dell PowerVault 124T - Same tape drive

On the new setup, when trying to run a backup job it transfers extremely slow, most of the time not even showing a transfer rate.  For under 50MB it seems like it will just keep on running until I cancel it, and even then, it gets stuck in pending cancel mode and I've just been restarting the backup exec services.

I switched back to the old set up and transfer speeds are normal.

I've tried test backups from remote servers as well as the server that Backup Exec is installed on, and its the same issue.

I tried a test disk-to-disk backup and it ran just fine, no problems.

When I try doing the live update on Backup Exec, it downloads the updates and then fails for the install.  It suggest a registry fix which applied successfully, but when I tried the updates again it still failed.

Even though windows recognized and installed the tape drive, I downloaded and tried installing the latest drivers for the Dell 124T, but when I try to install it says the latest drivers are already installed.

I can run clean jobs and erase the tapes with no problems.

I'm stumped, our company needs to remove all 2003 servers and the deadline is fast approaching.

Any thoughts? I appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,
Richard
