Hello Experts!,

Good day!

One of our customers wants to upgrade and enable dedup, their BE 2010 to BE 2014 or 15. Since their Backup is riding in VM, i suggest to them that

they need to migrate their BE 2010 on a physical server so that we can configure dedup.

Question:

1. How we will migrate the whole BE 2010 R3 on the new Physical server?

2. Since they're moving to physical, what is the suggested HDD for dedup? and without dedup? Is there a tool we can use?

3. Also, they're planning to use their physical server itself as a storage (partition). Can we configure it as a dedup?

When we do a GRT backup of our virtual Exchange server (Windows Server 2008 Ent) through our hyper-v host (Windows Server 2012 R2) with GRT enabled this does not truncate our logs. There are no errors on the job and says it's successful.

When I check back in the log directory of exchange, all the logs from the databases still exist and have not been flushed.

I'm running Backup Exec 2014 with SP2 + HF227745

Side note; when we run a backup of the Exchange server as if it were a physical machine the logs are truncated without issue (so it leads me to believe that this is not an issue with our Exchange server)

I have a ticket out with Symantec for over 2 months now and the tech(s) that are assigned to my case don't seem to be making much leeway in steps to figure out what's wrong so I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this issue and found a resolution?

I'm trying to duplicate about 800 images onto LTO6 tapes. These images have already been phase 1 and 2 imported.

Everytime I run this command, it fails with error 190 (found no images or media matching the selection criteria).

This is the command.

/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpduplicate -Bidfile /tmp/LTO1_091815_BackupID -dstunit US_NYK_MS2_LTO1_TO_LTO6 -dp US_NYK_LTO6 -cn 1 -dcn 2 -rl 9 -L /tmp/LTO1_091815_BackupID_log

Something else to note is when I run the command immediately again, it fails with "remote file copy failed 12: file open failed".

All help is greatly appreciated.

Hello all, 

This is my first post ever to a forum and I believe it's a bit of a problem. I work for a small IT Support firm. We have a customer that has a few C&C machines that run from the blueprints and software off of Window 7 machines. We were notified by manufacture of the machines there is a voltage flux in the machines that are prone to destorying the PCs connected to the machine. 

Our customer would like us to take an image of the computers and be able to reinstall the images taken on new hardware, computers that have different hardware configurations, all without losing any information, programs and computer OS. 

I'm looking for ideas on how this can be done. I've read it can be done, just not sure how to approach the problem, so I'm looking for some ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BE15 on Windows Server 2012 R2:  I am running a restore job to recover 1 file (97kb).  I created the restore job by selecting restore from Backup Set (incremental).  The issue I have is that BE is not searching the media associated with the selected backup set.  It started searching media from the full that occurred 3 days ago.

The full contains over 180 media files whereas the incremental only contains 3 media files.  This is taking longer than it should.  The Backup Storage is an EMC DataDomain - 2500 - Using DDBoost.

Is this normal?  Is there a better way?

I read that Netbackup 7.7 does not support Windows 2003 but does this mean that the backup of a Windows 2003 client is also not supported? What if the client is running Netbacklup 7.6.0.4?

I have setup a DR environment (built a new NetBackup server with same version, name and install path as production, imported the DR catalog) and I am attempting to restore VMware backups from a NetBackup 7.6.0.3 Master Server. So far I have:

• Given the NetBackup server VMware access via NetBackup Management > Host Properties > Master Servers > VMware Access Hosts
• Added the VMware target server (standalone ESXi 5.5 host not connected to vCenter) by FQDN (added to NetBackup server based on the output of the "hostname" command run on the ESXi host including upper/lower casing)
  • Tried adding as "VMware ESX server" and "Recovery ESX server"
  • Used root credentials
  • Tried with no port number and with 443
• When selecting "Restore" for the virtual backup and "Alternate location" the following occurs:
  • Initially an error occurs as the default settings are of a NetBackup server which doesn't exist in the DR environment which is as expected
  • After selecting the correct NetBackup server and selecting "None" for vCenter server the "ESX server" field is automatically populated with my ESXi host in the DR environment
  • The following errors then appear:
    • Retrieving details of resource pools - Failed system call failed ( 11 )
    • Retrieving details of data stores - Failed system call failed ( 11 )

I am then not able to progress any further. I have tried a few things based on this post: http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/unable-select-datastore-netbackup-vmware-restore

• In Backup, Archive& Restore changed the values in the Troubleshooting tab - general to 2 and verbose to 5.
• Browsed to c:\program files\veritas\netbackup\logs\bpvmutil\ and deleted everything in the folder
• Added a DWORD vmcloglevel and set it to 3 under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veritas\NetBackup\CurrentVersion\Config\BACKUP\
• Added the string value disableFQDN under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veritas\NetBackup\CurrentVersion\Config\BACKUP

 

I have included the bpVMutil log. The ESXi server I am trying to restore to is called NZAKL3SREVH08. Can someone assist me in troubleshooting this issue?

Hi,

I have a question about MS SQL backup. I have created below job.

• Daily full backup job for database
• Incremental backup job for transaction log (repeat every 2 hrs)

Problem is incremental job (for transaction log) failure at 2pm, then I run it again.

Finally, job succeed but I found in "SQL/Full" in backup set, but not "SQL/Log"

Please advice.

I would like to change log directory/file from /var/log/messages to different.

There are some bptm logs like these below, which I need to write somewehre else, not in to /var/log/messages:

Is it possible to change such logs in to different file, for example /var/log/netbackupmessages ?

How to change it?

Media server is running on Linux.

Hi 

We are taking archive backups of one folder on Windows 2012 server & NBU version 7.6.0.1

Archive bat file is executed from Windows task scheduler. It backups files and fails to delete those files aftrer backup, archive backup job fails with EC50.

I checked netstat on port 13782/13724 on client, there are no "TIME_WAIT".

Also client read time out on media server is already very high.

Media Server HP UX 11.31, NBU 7.6.0.3

Please suggest.

but I had install SP2 update on the Backup Exec server and the issue should be solved in SP1, before SP2 available, but it appear now for one SQL server, not for all.

I am running BE 2014, 14.1 Rev 1786 - 64Bit.

I have a Windows Server 2008R2, running Lotus Notes 8.5.

Today I went to restore a mail file (.nsf) and found that it, along with most of my other mail files were not backed up on the tape I was using.  I'm not sure how long this goes back as I'm still investigating this.  

When looking at the selection list, the entire /Data/Mail directory is selected under the Lotus Domino option in the selection list, but when you browse into it, only recently created NSF files are listed.  

I was able to resolve the issue by following TECH165059 but this apparently does not resolve this issue from occuring again.  

This is a massive issue - how can I ever trust Symantec to backup all of my Domino databases without manually checking to ensure each one is present on the tape (this is not an acceptable solution)?  

To make this even more of a concern... Symantec has known of this issue at least as far back as version 2012, if not more.  I'm running 2014 so the issue was known but not resolved during a major update.

To reiterate, Backup Exec has 1 job, and it failed at that 1 job but conitnued to claim that it was actually doing that 1 job.  What can I put into place so that I can trust the system?  Is this resolved in BE15?

Have a dumb question that I havent been able to find an answer to...

If I have a policy disabled at the beginning of a backup window, but then enable it 2 hours after the start of the window do I need to run the backup manually or will the scheduler pick it up because it is still in the backup window?

I'm being asked by a manager to supply a report that I don't think is possible to provide ... at least not in the way that person is hoping to see it. :-/

Let's say that in a 24-hour period I back up 50 TB of data.  That (to me...) means that the sum total of the jobs that complete successfully (or, well, partially successfully) is 50 TB.

I'm being asked to show what that amount of data occupies *on tape*, without factoring in tape hardware compression.   Stay with me here.

In my mind, to get at least a reasonably accurate idea of how much tape this 50 TB backup set is using, I'd just need to know what my average tape compression ratio is, for my LTO5 tapes, and divide the 50 TB number by whatever my average per-tape capacity is (using that compression ratio.)   But again, that involves factoring in compression, and I'm being told not to do that for this report.

Aside from Accelerator or Dedupe backups, I cannot think of another way to do this.  

Anyone else?

media server:windows and client server:windows

multistreaming is enabled and all_local_drives selected in backup selection list.

backups successfully completed on d:\* and Shadow Copy Components: but  I am getting above error only on c:\* stream. so I ran backups seperately for this c:\ stream with multistreaming on test policy.

out of 20 streams 4 got failed wiht error:90.

Hi gurus,

NBU master - SUSE 11; NBU7.6.0.4

NBU media - SUSE 11; NBU7.6.0.4

NBU client - SUSE 11

I have limited space available in the client.

It seems that when we do direct install, we need a minimum space of 3GB-4GB.

Question is, if we do a push nbu client install, is there a space requirement difference?
