Catalog question

I need a solution

We have a tape which was used for a backup in 2007 and stored away in a safe. We recently pulled this tape to run a catalog job and when we view the data it not only shows the backed up files from 2007 but another backup set from Dec 2012. Is there a reason the data from 2012 is appearing? We have not used this tape since it was stored away in 2007.

Thanks!

? on configuring BE for MS SQL where database is on SANs

I need a solution

Hello,

We have:

  • BE 2012 running on Windows 2008 R2
  • BE 2012 RAWS + Enterprise Option
  • MS SQL 2008 R2 (standard) running on Windows Server 2008 R2
  • SANs used for master, temp, and db (size 200 GB)

Separately, we backup the entire Windows 2008 R2 server where MS SQL 2008 R2 is installed (i.e. only has C: drive)

The database files reside on attached SAN and not on the C: drive.

Due to size, we want to only backup SQL and not everything on the C: drive and not everything on the SANs

When configuring BE 2012 for SQL backup, it sees MS SQL and the several databases and their correct sizes.

Questions when setting up configuration:

  1. Do we need to include the C: drive to be backed up (though no database here) or just check the box to backup the MS SQL databases?
  2. Do we need to check the SANs drives too, or will BE automatically read the database files from them ?
  3. If we include the C: drive and the SAN drives, and check the SQL option, will BE only backup the database or will it backup all of C: and all of the SANs?

If the databases were smaller we would just try various options and see, but due to their size and the time required to backup, it would be a lengthy trial and error process.

Thank you in advanced for your help,

SSR 2013 Monitor and Windows 7 clients

I need a solution

Hi All,

In SSR 2013 Monitor, I am unable to connect to Windows 7 clients running SSR 2013 (or SSR 2011). XP is fine and both have the same firewall policy in SEP 12.1.2.

When trying to connect to a Win7 Console I am given the following possibilities for not connecting (I suspect the last option): Any advice?

I will disable UAC on one system to test connection - but this wouldn't be desireable!

Possible Causes:

1)Computer is not connected to the network.

2)Firewall of the target computer is ON.

3)Supported Backup Exec System Recovery or Symantec System Recovery client is not installed on the target computer.

4)User credentials are incorrect.

5)UAC (User Access Control) security policy is enabled on the computer.

Backup Exec 2012 - warning to those of you still on 2010

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

I am the system administrator for my company and in charge of managing our backup infrastructure. I, like most other sys admins thought that this upgrade would be smooth, painless and problem free as have been my upgrades from 10d-11d, 11d-12, 12-2010. Unfortunately this is not the case.

I will start with the migration of your existing jobs. If like me you have multiple servers that shares similar characteristics in regards to backing up you will most likely have a job that encompasses multiple servers. My backup job had 12 servers in it. After migrating the job to 2012 I found that it had actually disappeared. What it had been replaced with is a single job for each server, all listed individually. You can see the problem. Now when I need to change a setting on this backup job I have to change it on every single server individually. Wow what a great feature.

Next I should try and describe what they have done with the well-loved, tried and tested interface that had taken tens of years of research, customer feedback and hard work to create. They binned it and replaced it with what I can only describe as an insult to my intelligence. You see Backup Exec assumes that this software is to be used with the mental age of about 5, possibly 6. I'm not kidding when I say they have drastically reduced your ability to have complete control and granularity over your backups. Here are some examples; Sometimes I need to exclude a particular job from running on a particular day - maybe because it will clash with another manually run job I have started. You can no longer exlude individual jobs! What, surely not I hear you say? Well its true, when you click the exclude button on the very difficult to navigate, badly designed an hideous looking calendar it excludes all of your jobs at the same time. Why would I want this? I should have the choice, why am I forced to exclude ALL of my jobs?  Another bugbear is why we are forced to choose between weekday or weekend.  I want to specifiy certain days for certain backups as I did before - whats the matter don't you trust that people are capable of figuring out what a weekday is? I loved the scheduler in BE 2010, it worked so well. It is sorely missed.

Occasionally I like to view the jobs I currently have running, maybe I need to know how far through a particular job is or just want to see all my jobs at a glance. Bad luck. The job monitor has been removed, I can no longer see any of my running jobs. A half-baked attempt at resolving this was to add the 'View All Jobs' button in service pack but it still doesn't show inventory/cleaning jobs and is horrible to look it.

Cleaning Tapes. I have a Quantum Super Loader 3 Tape library, that once in a while requires a cleaning tape to be run through it. This worked perfectly in BE 2010. Since upgrading to BE 2012 I am told 'The cleaning tape has expired' every time I try to run it. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to live with a dirty tape unit.

Backup to Disk - as I generally use tapes this is not a feature I often use. However when I have used it I found a significant problem. I am not allowed to choose the folder I want to backup to? BE 2012 forces you to select a drive and then creates its own folder structure that means nothing to most people.

The interface. I have touched on this before but it is just horrible, over simplified, removal of multiple necessary features, confused design, too many clicks required to get where you need, hiding important options etc etc etc. If Symantec want to remain in the business of backing up people's data they need to take a good hard look at some of the comments on this forum as there re thousands of sys admins like me who are prepared to switch to Acronis & co if these show stopping faults are not rectified. I ask the developers/designers what an earth were you thinking and in which world was this ever a good idea? You had a great product and you trashed it, badly. Very sad, Veritas are turning in their grave.

DR Test - Server 2003 DC - BE11d

I need a solution

Hi all,

I'm currently carrying out a DR test of some of our servers. The 1st server is our main DC, which is also a file server. We're using BE 11d.

These are the instructions I followed

http://www.backupexecfaq.com/performing-a-local-di...

I've built another server with identical hw, partitioned the drives, installed Server 2003 with SP2, then installed BE11d and restored the C, E partitions along with the Shadow components and System State from tape. The option I changed within BE for the restore over existing files, as mentioned in the link above.

At completion of the restore a load of popups appeared mentioning SP2 files couldn't be found where expected. I installed SP2 again (which I did during the initial build of the DR server), rebooted and now the server won't progress past the Server 2003 splash screen... just keeps on rebooting.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

We added a new drive to our tape library.  The drive shows under the Devices tab; however, it shows as offline.  I can bring it on line, but jobs aren't sent to the drive. I used the configuration wizard.  The new drive shows as a stand-alone device.  If I drag and drop it to the proper location, the old drive and new drive change places.  Jobs are still sent only to the first drive.  I checked the device manager.  The drivers for both drives show and the library is configured properly.  The Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

VMWare Plugin shows 0 protected

I need a solution

Hello and thank you in advance for any assistance provided.

Regarding the Symantec Plugin for VMware, I am currently able to login to the media server via the vSphere agent, but no backups show and zero VMs show up as protected. I have read countless web articles regarding setup and configuration, but must be missing something. Here is what I have done so far.

  • Installed the plugin on the vSphere server, Backup Exec 2012 server, and local workstation
  • Registered the Plugin on the vSphere server however I was uncertain of what "Username" to use. Used a domain admin account
  • Ensured that the Logon account I use in BackupExec to run the VM jobs is an Administrator within vSphere
  • Attempted to connect to vSphere using the netbios name and IP address. In Backup exec, I use the Netbios name to connect to the vSphere server
  • Attempted to launch the vSphere client with the Logon account used to run VM backups
  • Within the Symantec Plugin tab in vsphere, connected to the media server using FQDN, netbios, and IP. Used the System logon account and personal account
  • Ensured I am running version 2.1 of the Plugin

At this point, I'm not sure what I could be missing. Any assistance is appreciated!

Understanding VMWare Backups

I need a solution

A couple of weeks ago I moved a batch of clients from typical client based backups to VMWare backups.  The elapsed time for each client is significantly better in most cases, but I have a couple of questions.  Here's the output for a 3 clients...

Client                     Duration                 MBytes                   # of Files

A - Before            1:13:46                     35,140                   309,816

A - After                 27:52                      56,010                  540,143

__________________________________________________________

B - Before               32:52                     19,088                   30,139

B - After                 10:44                      29,366                  125,616

___________________________________________________________

C - Before          01:41:41                      93,911                  230,408

C - After             01:30:16                    116,684               1,807,396

My question is, why is there such a large discrepancy in the size of the backup, and even more so, in the # of files?  I love the faster backups but I wonder if I'm doing something wrong.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

Hello,

I am getting the following  error when I try to install the 7.1 AIX client, I have seen another post on this but doesn't really seem to solve the issue .

What it means? How can be fixed?

For me it seems to be incompatible. McAfee VirusScan is disabled, No firewall, Users has admin rights.

VMLevel Exchange DAG Backups

I need a solution

We perform DAG backups at the moment over the network from Backup Exec and i read that Symantec does not support DAG over VMware, is this still the case? will there be any plans for allowing this?

From the 2012 SCL:

Note: The Backup Exec 2012 Agent for Hyper-V does not support Exchange 2007 LCR, CCR or SCC and Database Availability Groups (DAG's) for Exchange 2010

due to the distributed nature of these applications beyond a single Guest virtual machine. To protect these applications when they are distributed across multiple Guest

Virtual Machines, please use the Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft Exchange inside of each of the Guest Virtual Machines to protect them.
